1. How do I download and install Boingo Mobile software to my Nokia handset?

  • First, make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • There are several ways to download and install Boingo Mobile software:
    • From your Nokia handset, find and download Boingo:
      1. From the Ovi Store (just do a search on “Boingo”).
      2. Via Menu>Download!>Applications (on older phone models).
      3. Via the Boingo website here.
    • From your PC, download the software via the Boingo website and then transfer over to your handset using Nokia PC Suite.
  • Nokia N97 users do not need to install Boingo since the software comes pre-installed on all N97s. Locate Boingo via: Menu>Applications.

2. How do I sign up for a Boingo Mobile subscription?

  • First, make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • You can sign up for an account from your device or a PC:
    • From your Nokia device: sign up for an account by opening the Boingo Mobile application and selecting Sign up Now! When you have completed the signup process, your device will update with the latest hotspot settings.
    • From your PC: visit mobile.boingo.com/nokia/signup. Once you have completed the signup process, open Boingo Mobile on your Nokia handset, go to Settings, and enter the username and password you created. Your device will update with the latest hotspot settings.
  • Nokia N97 users must activate their Boingo account via the pre-installed Boingo software in order to receive the 3 months of free Boingo. A SIM card with a data plan is required to sign up.

3. Are there special settings on the phone that I need to modify in order to use Boingo?

  • Yes, there are a couple of settings that you need to modify on your phone in order for Boingo to work.
    • First enable WLAN scanning (this allows Boingo look for Boingo hotspots in the background):
      1. Menu>Tools>Settings>Connection>Wireless LAN. In the Show WLAN availability setting, select Yes.
      2. On N97s: Settings>Connectivity>Wireless LAN>Options>Settings. In the Show WLAN availability setting, select Yes.
    • Second, enable prompt to select connection type when launching an online application (this gives you the option to select Wi-Fi when it is available, rather than the phone defaulting to a cellular data connection):
      1. Open the browser.
      2. Select Options>Settings>General>Access Point.
      3. Select Always ask.

4. How do I connect to a Boingo Mobile Hotspot?

  • First, make sure you are in a Boingo Mobile Hotspot (find one here: mobile.boingo.com/locations).
  • Launch the browser or online application such as Ovi Store.
  • You will be prompted to select an access point or connection. Boingo should be one of these options. If not, please cancel and try once again.
  • Select Boingo (this appears only if a Boingo Mobile Hotspot is available).
  • You will notice login messages during the connection process.
  • You should be online after these login messages complete.

5. Sometimes, when I go to a Boingo Mobile location, I don't see the Boingo network. What should I do to connect?

  • If you don't see the Boingo network right away, wait for a short period of time (less than 5 minutes) so the WLAN scanner can find us. You can also launch the browser and select Search for WLAN to manually scan for hotspots.

6. Why do I sometimes see a blank web page after trying to connect to a Boingo network?

  • If your device was unable to obtain an IP address or the wireless access point was not behaving properly, the browser will show a blank page. The best thing to do is to try to connect again. If the problem persists, please send us an email at mobilesupport@boingo.com with your location, the date, and the time.

7. If I change my username or password via my laptop at http://my.mobile.boingo.com, do I need to update Boingo Mobile?

  • Yes, if you change your username or password via your laptop at my.mobile.boingo.com, your hotspot data will not get updated on the phone until you enter your new username and/or password on the phone as well.
  • To do so, open the Boingo Mobile application on your phone, select Settings and enter your new username and/or password. Once you have done this, your phone will be updated with latest hotspot data.

8. Can I install the Boingo Mobile client from a MacIntosh to a Nokia phone?

  • Yes, you can install Boingo Mobile from your Mac to your S60 device using Bluetooth. Once Boingo Mobile is moved to your phone, the installation WILL begin automatically.

9. After I re-boot my phone, how long should I wait before starting Boingo Mobile?

  • After the phone restarts, the Boingo Mobile application will take approximately 30 to 45 seconds to initialize. If you try to start the application within this time, you may see an error message. If you do, start the application again and it will work fine. The best thing to do is wait 30 to 45 seconds after re-boot before starting Boingo Mobile.

10. What do I do if my device behaves strangely or freezes?

  • If your device is low on memory or disk space, it may freeze or show you error messages during updates of your hotspot data. About 100kb of free disk space is recommended at all times. Free up disk space for optimal application behavior.

11. How do I manually update the configuration version of Boingo Mobile software?

  • Ensure that you have an active Internet connection available (it need not be a Boingo connection)
  • Open the Boingo Mobile client
  • Go to Settings>Options>Update hotspots
  • Select Update now

13. What can I do to improve the legibility of the Boingo text on my N97?

  • If you’re having trouble reading the buttons within the Boingo application, change your phone theme from the phone’s default theme. To do so, start at the Main Menu and select Settings>Themes>General.

14. If I don’t activate my 3 months of free Wi-Fi on a device pre-installed with Boingo, will the application and IAP interfere with my ability to connect via other Wi-Fi access points?

  • No, the Boingo application and IAP will not interfere with your ability to connect via other connections. You will still see Boingo listed as an Internet Access Point in your Destinations folder, but it will not be usable unless you activate your Boingo account.

15. Can I remove the Boingo application and IAP (Internet Access Point) from my pre-loaded Nokia device (e.g., the N97)?

  • No, you cannot remove the Boingo application because it is pre-installed (in the ROM), just like other native applications such as Contacts, Calendar, Clock, etc. You can, however, install a special patch software to remove Boingo as an IAP from the Destinations folder. To remove Boingo as an IAP:

    • From the main menu on your device, select Settings>Connectivity>Destinations>Internet and confirm that Boingo is listed as an access point.
    • Download the Boingo patch software to your device.
    • As soon as the installation is complete, the patch software automatically launches and removes the Boingo IAP.
    • You will see a confirmation message that the Boingo IAP is being removed.
    • To check that the Boingo IAP has been removed, navigate again to the Destinations menu.
